Design matters -more than you could ever imagine. According to research by Forrester (2016), Good UX can increase the conversion rate by up to 400%. That’s an insane number, to begin with. Furthermore, it helps to provide a buttery smooth user experience and satisfaction.

Let me introduce you to who the heck UX designers are. They’re more than mere creators of digital products. Their responsibilities are primarily to understand how the human brain responds to different designs, improve their design’s usability, and understand human behavior, psychology, and cognition. As much as functionalities are concerned, they also have to pay heed to the enjoyability of a product.

In this article, I’ll rank the top 5 UX designers. As the design is subjective, I have had a hard time picking the top 5. So, what would’ve been better than asking mighty ChatGPT?

Here we go, the top 5 UX designers, according to ChatGPT

1. Don Norman

The Chatbot’s first pick is Don Norman. He’s the author of ‘The Design of Everyday Things’ and a pioneer in the field of design, usability, and cognitive systems.

Norman graduated from MIT in 1957 with a B.S. in electrical engineering and received a Ph.D. in psychology from the University of Pennsylvania. Later, he implemented his knowledge of engineering and psychology in his work. He joined Apple Computer in 1993 as a user experience architect. Norman also co-founded a design consultancy firm named Nielsen Norman Group.

In his long career, he did countless things that shaped the future of design. He received the ACM CHI Lifetime Achievement Award and the Benjamin Franklin Medal in Computer and Cognitive Science for his contribution.

2. Jakob Nielsen

In 1998, The New York Times named him “the guru of Web page usability,” and Internet Magazine recognized him as the “King of usability.”

You may have guessed him as the cofounder of the Nielsen Norman Group I was talking about earlier. Well, you’re right. Before that, he worked as a Distinguished Engineer at Sun Microsystems, making heavy-duty enterprise software easier to use.

Like his friend Don Norman, he had a versatile career. Nielsen founded the usability engineering movement and invented several usability methods like heuristic evaluation. He also holds over a thousand U.S. patents.

You weren’t alone if you had issues with your Windows 8 interface. Neilson heavily criticized Windows 8 usability issues. Not only Windows but also went after iPad, as well. His criticism only made these products better over time.

He published several books, including ‘Usability Engineering,’ ‘Hypertext and Hypermedia,’ and so on. Nielson received the SIGCHI Lifetime Practice Award and was listed by Bloomberg Businessweek as one of the “World’s Most Influential Designers.”

3. Kim Goodwin

With over 25 years of experience working at Cooper, Yahoo, and Microsoft, she is one of the most influential personalities in the UX and product design field. She also worked at PatientsLikeMe, a healthcare technology firm, as the Vice President of Product and User Experience.

Kim taught design courses at many universities and was widely recognized as a fantastic speaker at business events. She’s an active advocate of human-centered design. In other words, understanding users’ requirements and views during the design process. She has been vocal about incorporating design thinking into company strategy.

Currently, she’s working as the V.P. UX at Woebo. In her long career, she helped many, including startups, universities, government agencies, and even the world’s largest companies.

4. Julie Zhuo

Julie is one reason we are intoxicated with the most used social media platform, Facebook.

She joined Meta as an intern in 2006. Julie soon became the vice president of product and design at only 25. At Meta, she led the design of some indispensable products and features, such as News Feed, Messenger, Groups, and many more.

This Chinese-American businesswoman graduated from Stanford University with a computer science degree. Her book, “The Making of a Manager,” received immense praise and success. The list hasn’t been finished yet. She is also an angel investor and speaker.

Currently, Zhuo is working at Sundial, which she co-founded.

5. Jared Spool

Jared is a writer, speaker, educator, researcher, and expert in UX. He has been working on usability and design since 1978.

He founded Unser Interface Engineering (UIE), a research, training, and consultancy firm that aims at UX design. He has been very active in designing, and his voice is reflected in several articles and books on UX design he wrote.

Jared was an adjunct faculty member at Tufts University. He designed a unique curriculum for the Experience Design Management course, where students learn how to create usable and effective digital products. He also co-founded the UX immersion conference series.

In recent years, he has spent time with research teams, several organizations, and industry analysts aiming to solve design problems.

These five ensured every tap, click and swap was a positive experience. Their tireless effort and dedication made our life so much easier.

They’re the heroes of the digital world.
